In fact, lifelong learning plays an outstanding role. A positive example is the famously advanced Scandinavian region, where the proportion of people taking part in adult education is exceptionally high, at a rate of 25-36%.

In this blog post, we explore why it is worth embarking on a learning journey as an adult and what benefits it can bring for personal and professional development.

How do adults learn?

Adult learning takes many forms, using different methods and serving different purposes. The three main categories are formal, non-formal and informal learning.

1. Formal learning

This takes place within the familiar formal education system (e.g. secondary schools, vocational institutions, universities). Formal learning is structured, curriculum-based, and concludes with a certificate or degree.

2. Non-formal learning

This type of learning is also organised, but it is not necessarily curriculum-based and is more flexible than formal learning. Its aim may be to develop career-related skills or expand competencies and knowledge according to an individual’s interests. Non-formal learning often takes place at the workplace, in adult education institutions, or through community organisations, and often does not result in a formal document certifying completion. Common forms of non-formal learning include corporate further training and workshops, various skills-development programmes, language courses, and artistic or craft activities.

3. Informal learning

This type of learning is neither organised nor conducted within official or company-like structures, as it very often occurs during everyday activities. In informal learning, individuals learn new things independently and in a self-directed, autodidactic way, often without deliberately setting out to learn. We learn informally when we read professional literature or books, attend webinars, watch educational films, attend lectures by professionals we consider important, listen to podcasts, gain new knowledge from more experienced colleagues, or simply carry out our everyday tasks and acquire additional knowledge along the way.

Why is it worth learning as an adult?

Now that we have clarified what adult learning means, let us look at some of the benefits of acquiring new knowledge regardless of age.

Continuous personal development

Lifelong learning is key to personal development. Acquiring new knowledge, developing our skills, and opening up new perspectives all contribute to an adult’s ability to continue growing in any area of life. Learning presents new challenges, stimulates creativity, and also contributes to building positive self-esteem. Isn’t it a great feeling when we share an interesting fact in a group that only we know and, for a moment, think of ourselves as the smartest person in the world?

The key to building a career

From the perspective of professional development, lifelong learning is indispensable. Because of the rapidly changing labour market and technological development, adults must continuously develop their skills and knowledge. Acquiring new abilities and competencies can help you move up the career ladder, opening the way to higher positions, better job opportunities, improved financial conditions, or greater recognition and prestige.

Mental freshness through challenges

Learning sets exciting challenges and brings mental freshness to everyday life. Processing new knowledge and applying it in practice stimulates the brain, improves cognitive function and lays the foundation for mental agility, which helps you rise to challenges and develops your sense of responsibility as well as your ability to cooperate and to reflect on yourself. All in all, the series of experiences that come with learning and reaching goals has a positive effect on an individual's mental health.

Learning as a tool for self-development

Lifelong learning also offers opportunities for self-development. Whether it is learning a new language, developing an artistic skill, or expanding our personal interests, learning allows adults to discover areas in which they can broaden their knowledge and experience.

Community building

Lifelong learning also creates opportunities to meet new people and become part of communities. Through courses, workshops, online programmes, and interest-based forums and groups, adults can not only acquire new knowledge but also connect with people who share similar interests.

Closing thoughts

Lifelong learning is a valuable tool that contributes to adults’ personal and professional development. Openness to new challenges and opportunities not only supports our individual growth, but also enriches our lives and contributes to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Remember: it is never too late to start learning, and every new piece of knowledge can bring us one step closer to achieving our personal and professional goals.

Coming next…

In our next post, we will discuss the practical importance of digital training-management and e-learning systems.

[14

post-516","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-szakmai-blog
["GET
